The Flamenco Beach Grounding
On July 21st, "Obsession" struck a reef near Flamenco Beach, leading to its grounding. The U.S. Coast Guard has since been involved, taking charge of the situation to mitigate any potential environmental damage. Their primary concern was the risk of a fuel spill, which could have severe consequences for the delicate marine ecosystem around Flamenco Beach.
Fuel Removal Efforts
Fuel removal from the grounded vessel was a top priority. By July 31st, the Coast Guard had successfully overseen the extraction of all fuel onboard, significantly reducing the immediate environmental threat. This operation was crucial in protecting the coral reefs and marine life in the area.
Unresolved Questions
The exact circumstances that led to the grounding are still unclear. Was it a result of skipper error, adverse weather conditions, or perhaps an anchor that dragged unexpectedly? We'll update the post once we obtain more information.
Salvage Operations
As of now, "Obsession" remains grounded on the reef, and it is uncertain when salvage operations will be completed. Removing the vessel requires meticulous planning and execution to avoid further damage to the reef and the surrounding environment.
Anchoring at Flamenco Beach
I've anchored at Flamenco Beach before, and it truly is a beautiful spot with great holding. It's best to anchor here under settled conditions. Strong trade winds can wrap swell into the anchorage, and this is no place to be with a north swell running due to its northerly exposure. The reef is easily avoided, and it's best to tuck into the southeast corner of the anchorage for the best protection
