Eustatia Sound is a serene and secluded anchorage located between Prickly Pear Island and Eustatia Island in the British Virgin Islands. This area offers a peaceful escape from the bustling activity of North Sound while still being within easy reach of its resorts and restaurants by dinghy.
A Perfect Escape
Eustatia Sound is often one of the first stops on our BVI sailing trips. This tranquil area gets me perfectly settled in vacation mode every time. It’s also a convenient jumping-off point for the offshore crossing to Anegada. The sound provides a sense of seclusion and calm, making it an ideal spot for those looking to escape the crowds.
Anchoring Guide
There are two main approaches to Eustatia Sound. The easier route is to enter the wide channel on the east side of Prickly Pear Island from the north. Alternatively, you can enter North Sound and continue east towards Saba Rock, using the channel markers and keeping Saba Rock to port. Proceed carefully around the reef, giving yourself plenty of space.
Anchor west of Eustatia Island in about 10-15 feet of water. The bottom is sandy, and your anchor should set well. However, note that this spot is exposed to northerly ground swells, so it’s best to visit in settled conditions.
Activities
Snorkeling
Eustatia Sound offers excellent snorkeling opportunities. The reef to the north provides a vibrant underwater world, perfect for exploring in calm conditions. The clear waters and abundant marine life make it a favorite spot for snorkeling enthusiasts.
Water Sports
Eustatia Island is a high-end, water sports-focused resort. You might see some of the guests kitesurfing nearby, adding to the lively atmosphere.
Nearby Attractions
Eustatia Sound is just a short dinghy ride from North Sound, where you can still enjoy the action at some nearby beach bars and restaurants. Our picks include Saba Rock and the Bitter End Yacht Club, both offering great food and drinks in a lively setting.
Notable Residents
The sound is flanked by two islands owned by billionaires: Eustatia Island, owned by Larry Page, and Necker Island, owned by Sir Richard Branson. Both islands add a touch of exclusivity and glamour to the area.
Important Considerations
Take note that this area is redlined by several charter companies, such as the Moorings. Make sure you confirm during your boat briefing. If it is off-limits, you can still explore this area with your dinghy from North Sound.
Eustatia Sound’s combination of natural beauty, excellent snorkeling, and proximity to North Sound’s amenities make it a must-visit destination for sailors in the BVI.
