Diamond Cay in BVI, a small yet fascinating destination for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts.
Matt Weidert
I've visited Diamond Cay, part of the Diamond Cay National Park and a renowned bird sanctuary, on back to back BVI trips and I much prefer this anchorage at Jost Van Dyke to Great Harbour. It is considerably more scenic and a quieter place to overnight.
Why visit Diamond Cay, Jost Van Dyke?
While I once favored anchoring at White Bay, the often unpredictable weather and crowded conditions have led me to prefer the more secluded Diamond Cay. Diamond Cay is situated between Jost Van Dyke and Little Jost Van Dyke, offering a unique vantage point for exploring the surrounding waters.
During the day, White Bay remains a favorite spot, but as evening draws near, relocating to the east end of Diamond Cay provides a perfect retreat. Here, you’re not just treated to exceptional natural beauty but also a host of amenities. Securing a mooring ball at Diamond Cay can be competitive, so it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season.
What to do at Diamond Cay, Jost Van Dyke
Hike to the Bubbly Pool: a must-visit, the Bubbly Pool offers a fun and refreshing experience. The hike to this natural wonder is easy, making it suitable for most visitors at less than a half mile
Beach Bars: spend your afternoon playing cornhole, sipping cheap drinks, and soaking in the laid-back vibe at local spots like B-Line and Foxy’s Taboo. These venues promise a quieter alternative to the more bustling White Bay.
Sunsets: despite facing east, Diamond Cay often surprises with spectacular sunsets. The skies here can light up with brilliant hues of purple and orange, especially notable during our visit in October. It's a perfect moment to capture and enjoy as the day winds down.
Explore the rocky cliffs: Take a hike to view the stunning rocky cliffs on the windward side of Diamond Cay, which offer breathtaking views and are home to nesting seabirds.
Relax on the beaches: Enjoy the serene rocky and sand beaches on the leeward side of Diamond Cay, perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling.
Diamond Cay is a serene escape that offers both relaxation and adventure. As part of the Diamond Cay National Park, this area offers a variety of activities for nature enthusiasts. Diamond Cay is also a proposed protected area, highlighting its importance for conservation and marine life. Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to anchor overnight or an exciting afternoon at the beach bars, Diamond Cay provides a unique blend of both. Don’t miss the chance to explore this lesser-known gem of the BVI on your next charter trip!
