Sandy Spit in BVI is a must visit for your next yacht charter visit. Many years ago, on my first ever bareboat charter trip, this location had the honors of being the first place I ever dropped the hook.
Why visit Sandy Spit, BVI, and what to do there?
Sandy Spit is unique - there isn't quite an island or sand bar like it elsewhere in the British Virgin Islands. It's worth dropping the hook and heading ashore for a picnic or to toss around the football.
The views of Tortola and Jost Van Dyke will want to make you stay all day!
Hurricane Irma gave Sandy Spit quite the haircut, but efforts from locals are starting to pay off with several palm trees having taken root.
You can anchor here overnight, but only in settled conditions. Strong tradewinds can wrap swell around the reef making this one uncomfortable and rolly. Be careful of the rocks to the southeast of Sandy Spit.
Otherwise, it's a straightforward anchorage in 10-15 feet of sandy bottom.
