Pelican Cayes is a unique and picturesque anchorage located in the southern part of Belize. This area is renowned for its protection from waves in almost every direction, making it a favored stop for sailors. The anchorage is surrounded by lush mangroves and crystal-clear waters, offering excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Mooring and Anchorage Information

There are five well-maintained mooring balls at Pelican Cayes, provided by Hideaway Caye Restaurant, available for boats up to 50 feet in length. The overnight mooring fee is $20 USD, which can be paid directly at the Hideaway Caye dock. If you prefer to anchor, you can do so close to the mangroves to the north, where the depth is sufficient, and the holding is reliable. However, due to the deep nature of the anchorage and the steep drop-off near the mangroves, it is essential to use good anchoring techniques to ensure your anchor sets well.

Snorkeling and Diving near the Pelican Cayes

Pelican Cayes is a haven for snorkelers and divers, offering some of the best underwater experiences in Belize. The area around the north side of Northwest Cay is particularly noted for its vibrant marine life, including starfish, rays, sea turtles, and a variety of fish. The reefs to the east and west of the cay provide excellent spots for exploring the rich underwater ecosystem. The snorkeling conditions are ideal, with clear water and abundant marine life.

Dining and Hospitality at Hideaway Caye

Their small restaurant and bar offer a unique "Swiss Family Robinson" experience, with delicious meals, refreshing drinks, and warm hospitality. The couple is well-known for their rum punch and mouth-watering dishes, making dining here a memorable part of your visit to Pelican Cayes. Reservations for dinner can be made via VHF Channel 74, and it is recommended to contact them in advance to secure your spot.

Navigational Tips

Navigating to Pelican Cayes requires careful attention, as the charts in the area are not always accurate. The recommended approach is from the south, keeping Lagoon Cayes and South Caye on your starboard side. After passing South Caye, you should turn northwest and use eyeball navigation to carefully weave through the middle of Pelican Cayes until you reach the anchorage. It's best to avoid making this approach for the first time in poor light conditions.

Pelican Cayes offers a perfect blend of seclusion, natural beauty, and warm hospitality, making it a must-visit spot on your sailing adventure in Belize.
