Whipray Caye, also known as Wippari Cay, is a small and secluded island in Belize, renowned for its excellent guided permit fishing and beautiful surroundings. This tiny caye is home to the Whipray Caye Fishing Lodge, making it a popular stop for anglers and sailors alike. Located just a short sail from Placencia, it offers a peaceful and authentic Belizean experience.

Anchorage at Whipray Caye

Anchoring at Whipray Caye can be tricky due to the presence of coral heads, but it is possible to find sandy patches for secure anchoring. The island has two mooring buoys on the west side, maintained by the Whipray Caye Fishing Lodge, making it easier for sailors to secure their vessels. If you plan to anchor, it's advisable to have someone in the water to guide you to a suitable spot. The holding ground has been reported as decent, though weathering strong winds may require additional care.

Fishing and Activities

Whipray Caye is a prime location for permit fishing, with guided tours available through the Whipray Caye Fishing Lodge. The surrounding waters are rich with marine life, making it an ideal spot for anglers seeking a rewarding experience. In addition to fishing, the caye offers opportunities for snorkeling, although the coral heads may require careful navigation.

Sea Urchin Bar and Restaurant

One of the highlights of Whipray Caye is the Sea Urchin Bar and Restaurant, a unique dining spot that serves a variety of Belizean and American dishes, mostly fresh from the sea. The fully stocked bar is known for having the coldest beer for miles around, and the thatched roof, open-air setting allows guests to enjoy spectacular sunsets while dining. Meals are served family-style at a fixed price, and reservations are recommended if you're not a guest at the lodge. The warm hospitality and cozy atmosphere make it a must-visit spot for anyone stopping by the caye.
