Lagoon Cayes, a pair of kidney-shaped mangrove islands, offers a secluded and well-protected anchorage perfect for exploring the surrounding area. With good protection from the northeast to southeast winds, these cayes are a favorite spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the Belizean waters.

Anchorage at Lagoon Cayes

The Lagoon Cayes offer a unique anchorage experience. As you approach the cayes, read the water carefully to navigate down to the entrance. You will cross a 10-foot bar, entering deep water with depths of over 20 feet. The lagoon quickly shallows after the second bar, so drop anchor in approximately 9 feet of water. The holding is good near the entrance, but if your vessel has a shallow draft, you may be able to move further into the lagoon for additional protection.
A mooring ball is located outside the entrance of the lagoon. While it is in good order, it is essential to check the lines before using it. This spot offers a serene and well-protected anchorage, making it an ideal location to ride out strong winds.

Snorkeling and Fishing at Lagoon Cayes

The Lagoon Cayes are surrounded by shallow waters, making snorkeling easy and enjoyable. The area features brain coral, sea fans, and an abundance of small fish, though larger species are less common. The mangroves provide an interesting underwater landscape, perfect for exploring the local marine life.
To the south and around the windward side of the cayes, you’ll find good coral heads and reefs. Fishing here can be rewarding, with opportunities to catch smaller fish around the lagoon. The area is also great for dinghy exploration, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of these secluded cayes.

Exploring Lagoon Cayes

The mangrove islands that form the Lagoon Cayes create a picturesque and tranquil environment. Exploring the lagoon by dinghy is a must-do activity, offering a unique perspective on the lush mangroves and the diverse ecosystem they support.
