Discover the British Virgin Islands
The BVI is hands-down the best place in the Caribbean for a crewed yacht charter — and I say that after 15+ years of sailing these islands. The weather is predictable, the trade winds are steady, and the distances between stops are short enough that you're never spending the whole day at sea.
There are over 60 islands and cays to explore, most of them uninhabited. You'll anchor in turquoise water so clear you can see the bottom at 30 feet, snorkel reefs that are teeming with life, and hit legendary beach bars like the Soggy Dollar and Willy T. The BVI has a well-established charter industry with mooring fields, national parks, and a community of experienced crews who know every anchorage.
Why first-timers love it: The sailing is protected (no open ocean crossings), the anchorages are well-marked, and there's an incredible variety packed into a small area. You can snorkel the Caves at Norman Island in the morning, hike to the Bubbly Pool on Jost Van Dyke by lunch, and watch the sunset from a floating bar — all in the same day.
When to go: Peak season runs November through July, with the most popular months being December through April. The trade winds are steadiest in winter, and the water is warm year-round (78-84°F). Read more about the best time to visit the BVI.
What to Expect on a Crewed Catamaran Charter
Your Crewed Charter Experience
Your private yacht charter is designed to be effortless — just step aboard and enjoy. With a dedicated crew taking care of every detail, all you need to do is relax, explore, and indulge.
A Custom Experience: Your itinerary is tailored to your preferences — secluded beaches, lively beach bars, snorkeling, and more. Want to spend the morning diving and the afternoon at the Soggy Dollar? Done. Want to skip the tourist spots entirely? Your captain knows the hidden gems.
Luxury & Privacy: Your yacht is a floating oasis, offering complete exclusivity away from crowded resorts. No fighting for pool chairs. No buffet lines. Just your group, your crew, and the open water.
Incredible Meals: Your private chef prepares gourmet meals customized to your group's preferences and dietary needs — from fresh-caught fish to five-star dinners under the stars. Learn more about what to expect on a crewed charter.
Meet Your Crew
Your crew is the heart of the charter experience. These are seasoned professionals who love what they do — and it shows.
- Captain: Your captain is responsible for navigation, safety, and anchoring. They know the best spots, the weather patterns, and how to get you to places most tourists never see. Many captains have been sailing the BVI for decades.
- Chef: From multi-course dinners to fresh ceviche on the swim platform, your chef handles every meal. Most will send a preference sheet before the trip so they can tailor menus to your group — including dietary restrictions, allergies, and that one person who absolutely needs their morning espresso.
- Steward/Host: On larger yachts, a steward handles cabin turndown, bar service, water sports setup, and making sure everything runs seamlessly behind the scenes.
Onboard Etiquette: A Few Simple Guidelines
A yacht is both a luxury retreat and a working vessel. These simple guidelines help ensure a smooth trip for everyone:
Respecting the Yacht & Crew
- Your Crew is Here for You: Treat them with kindness, and communicate your needs openly. They are dedicated to making your experience unforgettable.
- Barefoot on Board: Most yachts have a no-shoes policy to protect the decks and keep the yacht clean.
- Smoking: If smoking is permitted, it will be restricted to designated outdoor areas. Smoking is never allowed inside.
Safety & Comfort
- Follow the Captain's Guidance: Your captain is responsible for your safety. If itinerary changes are needed due to weather or logistics, trust their expertise.
- Mind the Water Usage: Most yachts have water makers, but water is still a limited resource, so be mindful of long showers.
- Music & Noise Levels: Enjoy your favorite playlists, but keep volume reasonable at night or in quiet anchorages.
In the Rare Event of a Complaint
Complaints are rare. But, if something comes up, most issues are easily resolved onboard.
1. Speak to the Captain First — They handle all onboard concerns and can usually resolve them quickly.
2. If Unresolved After 12 Hours — Contact us so we can step in and assist.
If further action is needed, we'll guide you through the next steps, following the charter agreement. Just reach out — we're here to help!
Crewed Charter Pricing & What's Included
Crewed catamaran charter pricing in the BVI varies based on the yacht, time of year, and charter length. Here's what to expect so there are no surprises.
All-Inclusive Charters
Most crewed catamarans in the BVI are all-inclusive, meaning one price covers everything: the yacht, crew, all meals and drinks, water sports equipment, fuel, and cruising permits. For a week-long charter on a catamaran accommodating 6-10 guests, expect to pay $25,000 - $100,000+ depending on the yacht. See our full crewed charter pricing breakdown.
Plus Expenses (APA) Charters
Larger motor yachts and premium sailing yachts typically use a "plus expenses" model. You pay a base rate for the yacht and crew, plus an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) — typically 25-40% of the base charter fee — which covers fuel, food, beverages, dockage, and other running costs. Any unused APA is refunded at the end of the trip.
Payment Schedule
- 25% deposit to secure your dates
- Second payment of 25% at a scheduled interval
- Final 50% due before the charter
What's Included
For most Caribbean charters, everything you need for a seamless trip is included:
- Crew Services: A professional captain and chef. Larger yachts may also include a steward(ess) and deckhand.
- Meals & Drinks: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and standard bar (beer, wine, spirits).
- Water Sports Equipment: Snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and floats. Some yachts also have e-foils, seabobs, or scuba diving equipment.
- Fuel & Running Costs: Covers normal cruising within your itinerary.
- Cruising Permits & Fees: Cruising taxes and National Parks permits for BVI.
What's Not Included
Even with an all-inclusive package, a few things may come at an extra cost:
- Crew Gratuities: (See below)
- Docking & Marina Fees: If you choose to stay at a marina instead of anchoring.
- Premium Requests: Specialty wines, high-end spirits, or gourmet provisions beyond the standard offerings.
- Onshore Dining & Excursions: Any meals or activities you choose off the yacht.
- Transfers & Transportation: Getting to and from the yacht at the start and end of your trip.
Crew Gratuities
Your crew works hard to ensure an unforgettable experience, and tipping is the best way to show appreciation.
How Much to Tip? — The industry standard is 15-20% of the charter cost in the Caribbean. In Europe, 10-15% is standard.
When to Tip? — Gratuities should be given directly to the crew before disembarking on your final day.
How to Tip? — Most crews accept PayPal, CashApp, or cash in USD. If we are aware of the crew's preference, we will share that with you.

This tiny island is an idyllic spot for sunbathing, enjoying a picnic, or simply soaking in the serene 360-degree views.
Make the day your own with activities tailored to your group’s preferences. Take a hike from Foxy’s Taboo to the Bubbly Pool, a unique sea-fed pool that’s as refreshing as it is fun. Packing List
Packing for a crewed catamaran charter in the BVI is simple — your yacht comes fully stocked with essentials, and your crew takes care of all the details. You'll spend most of your time in swimwear and casual clothing, so pack light and focus on comfort.
General Packing Tips
Soft duffels are preferred but not required. Depending on your yacht, storage space can be limited.
Less is more! — Your days will be spent on the water, so you won't need many outfits.
Most toiletries are provided, but bring personal must-haves.
Clothing & Personal Items
-
Swimwear — Pack 3-4 swimsuits, since you'll spend most of your time in and out of the water.
-
2-3 Hooded Long-Sleeve UPF Shirts — Perfect for sun protection when you're out on the water.
-
Casual daytime wear — Tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, sundresses.
-
Evening attire — Lightweight, breezy outfits for dinners onboard or onshore.
-
Light sweater or windbreaker — Evenings can feel cool with the sea breeze.
-
Theme night outfit (optional) — If your group enjoys a little fun, bring something for a luau, 80s night, or pirate party.
-
Flip-flops / sandals — Ideal for shore excursions.
-
Soft-soled shoes — If you plan to hike or explore on land. You may also prefer a pair of water shoes.
-
Polarized sunglasses — Essential for reducing glare on the water (bring a backup pair!).
-
Hat — A packable dad hat or wide-brim hat for sun protection.
-
Dry bag (if you have one) — If not, the crew will help keep valuables protected.
No Shoes Onboard
Yachts have a no-shoes policy to keep the decks clean and prevent dirt from getting tracked aboard. You'll be asked to remove your shoes before stepping aboard — just a heads-up so you're prepared! Barefoot is the way to go.
Toiletries & Sunscreen
-
Reef-safe sunscreen — (lotion only, no spray!) — Protect yourself and the reefs.
-
Aloe vera or after-sun lotion — Helpful if you get too much sun.
-
Lip balm with SPF — A small but critical item.
-
Shampoo, conditioner & body wash — Yachts will provide, but bring your own if you have a preference.
-
Toothbrush, toothpaste, and personal toiletries — Keep it minimal.
-
Bug spray — Not always needed, but useful just in case. Your yacht will likely have some in case you'd prefer not to bring your own.

Fishing gear — Unless specifically requested, the yacht will provide it.
-
Hard suitcases — Soft duffels are easier to store.
-
Heavy shoes or boat shoes — You'll be barefoot onboard!
-
Towels — The yacht provides bath and beach towels.
-
Flashlight or waterproof phone case — The crew will handle nighttime navigation.
Getting to the BVI
There are a couple of ways to get to the BVI for your crewed yacht charter, and the best option depends on your schedule and budget. Here's what you need to know.
Option 1: Fly Direct to Tortola (EIS)
Tortola's Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) has limited direct flights — mainly from San Juan (PR), St. Thomas (USVI), and Antigua. If you can find a connection that works, this is the most convenient option since you'll already be on the island where most charters depart.
Option 2: Fly to St. Thomas (STT) + Ferry or Water Taxi
This is the most popular route. St. Thomas has a full-service international airport with direct flights from most major US cities. From there, you have two options to get to Tortola:
- Public Ferry: Runs from Red Hook (east end of St. Thomas) to Road Town, Tortola. About 45 minutes, ~$30/person each way. Ferries run multiple times daily but stick to a schedule — check times in advance.
- Private Water Taxi: More expensive but infinitely more convenient, especially with a group. They'll meet you at the airport dock and take you directly to your yacht. We recommend Island Time Water Taxi and Chillout Charters — both are reliable and we can help arrange it.
Pro Tip: Don't Forget Your Passport
The BVI is a British Overseas Territory — you'll need a valid passport to enter, even if you're coming from the US Virgin Islands. Make sure everyone in your group has theirs before you travel.
Arrival Day Tips
- Arrive the day before if you can. Flights get delayed, ferries have schedules, and you don't want to start your charter stressed. Book a hotel in St. Thomas or Tortola for the night before departure.
- Pack a carry-on with essentials. If your checked bag gets delayed (it happens), you'll want your swimsuit, sunscreen, and medications with you.
- Coordinate with your crew. We'll connect you with your captain beforehand so you can coordinate pickup logistics, provisioning preferences, and any last-minute questions.
Captain-Only Charter: The Best of Both Worlds
Not ready for a full crew but want more than a bareboat? A captain-only charter is the perfect middle ground. You get the expertise of a professional captain without the full crew — think of it as having a knowledgeable local guide who also happens to be an expert sailor.
Your captain handles navigation, anchoring, and safety while also serving as your personal concierge for the islands. They'll recommend the best snorkeling spots, help with provisioning, coordinate water sports, and share local knowledge you won't find in any guidebook.
What's Included with a Captain-Only Charter:
- Expert navigation and safety — Your captain knows these waters inside and out.
- Provisioning assistance — They'll help you stock the yacht with everything you need before departure.
- Local concierge — Restaurant recommendations, hidden anchorages, the best times to visit popular spots.
- After-meal cleanup — Your captain typically handles dishes and keeps the galley tidy.
- Water sports coordination — Setting up snorkel gear, paddleboards, and other equipment.
- Photography — Many captains are happy to capture memories for your group.
Captain-only charters are a great option for groups who enjoy cooking together, want a more hands-on experience, or are looking for a more budget-friendly way to enjoy the BVI with professional guidance.
Charter Tunes: The Perfect Soundtrack for Your Trip
No yacht trip is complete without the right playlist. We've fine-tuned the ultimate soundtrack to match every moment on board. Whether you're hoisting the sails, easing into the morning, or setting the vibe for a sunset cocktail hour, these playlists have you covered.
☀️ Summertime Steel Drums – A great morning playlist to gently wake up your group and set the tone for another perfect day in paradise.
⛵ Yacht Warriors Rock – Over a decade in the making, this playlist is perfect for cruising with the sails up. Think feel-good rock, classics, and smooth sailing vibes.
💃 Buena Vista Social Club Radio – Some Latin beats to set the evening mood, whether you're enjoying a sunset cocktail or a lively onboard dinner.
